“As Long as the Balos Lasts – Thermiotika Festivities” July 24–August 30, 2026

The cultural initiative kythniale celebrates its 5th anniversary on the island of Kythnos with a special photography exhibition bringing together the two arts of pause: the Balos and Photography. Both of these arts strive to capture what is fleeting—one a step, a glance, a turn—the other a moment of light. Through the photography exhibition “As Long as the Balos Lasts—Thermiotika Festivals,” the cultural initiative kythniale aims to establish a contemporary festival of remembrance for the Balos festivals in Kythnos and this beautiful tradition. This is a four-week temporary photography exhibition, running from July 24 to August 30, 2026, with an opening on Saturday, July 25, 2026, in the courtyard of Panagia Kanala.

At the heart of the project are the residents’ own archives. We reached out to the island’s cultural organizations and invited the people of Thermia to contribute material from their family archives—from photos of festivals, weddings, baptisms, and even family celebrations or simple moments of socializing featuring dance and music.

For the past two years, the Balos of Kythnos has been listed as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. The photographic material in this exhibition creates a resource that can be utilized by educators, researchers, and future curators, while also offering visitors an authentic, profound experience inspired by the island’s community and traditions.

Finally, this exhibition serves as an act of uniting the Thermiot community around its own memory—an act that holds value regardless of any measurable outcome.
