
The Mining History of Kythnos

kythniale presents a new documentary by photographer and filmmaker Giannis Machairas, titled The Mining History of Kythnos. Following his earlier works, Machairas explores the island’s mining heritage in a one-hour film that preserves memory and bridges generations.
Narrated by Giannis Bassiakos of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos,” the documentary features local stories from Dryopida and Chora and visits key sites such as Kakovolo, Lefkes, Zogkaki, and Tourkala. Original music by Giannis Machairas enhances the film’s immersive experience.
Contributors
Giannis Machairas was born in Kythnos and grew up in Palaio Faliro, always maintaining close ties with his island. A qualified Naval Architect, he began his musical journey with the Palaio Faliro Philharmonic Orchestra and later took part in rock bands. Since 2001, he has run his own studio, where he has composed and recorded over 250 songs.
He has served as vice-president of the Kythnian Association and, since 2024, is president of the Loutra Association “O Kakkavos”. He is actively involved in volunteering, photography, and the cultural documentation of Kythnos. In recent years, he has been producing documentaries focusing on the island’s history and traditions, including: “The Stone Enchanters”, “The Art of Stone”, “Agia Paraskevi”, “Giorgos Bellis - My Life”, “Xenia 1838 - 2021” and “The Mining History of Kythnos”.
