Kanala Becomes a Place of Memories, Images, and Dance<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The cultural initiative kythniale - Bridges of Culture celebrates its fifth year on the island of Kythnos with a special photography exhibition: in the courtyard of the Church of Panagia Kanala, from July 24 to August 30, 2026, the outdoor photographic installation \u201cAs Long as the Ball Lasts \u2014 Festivities of Thermia,\u201d dedicated to the Thermia-style balos and the festivities of Kythnos.<\/p>

Approximately forty large-scale prints on fabric, along with a printed art publication featuring an additional fifty images, transform the courtyard of Panagia Kanala into a vibrant cycle of memory centered on dance. The exhibition, curated by Vangelis Ioakeimidis, is an initiative of the non-profit organization kythniale - Bridges of Culture and is held in collaboration with the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Kythnos, in partnership with PostScriptum. It complements the digital project \u201cBalos Archive,\u201d which is co-funded by the Ministry of Culture\u2019s \u201cCreative Greece\u201d program.<\/p>

The installation does not approach the \u201cBalos\u201d as a folkloric representation, but as an act of collective self-reflection. The community of Kythnos sees, recognizes, and narrates itself through the images it has preserved. The photographic material comes from commemorative family and archival photographs of the people of Thermi, from the private archives of residents, musicians, and collectors, as well as from local associations and organizations, such as the Association of Dryopida, Kythnos, the Cultural Associations of Chora and Dryopida, as well as from private archives, including those of: Giorgis Venetoulias, Fragiskos Tziotakis, Antonis Kokiasmenos, Maria Manolika, Kalliopi Gonidaki, Chrysoula Zambeta, Katerina Giannitsani, Stella Kallila, Giorgos Fountzoulis, Vasilis Karfis, I. Ginis, and others.<\/p>

The curatorial concept connects two \u201carts of the pause\u201d: the ball and photography. Two ways to capture what moves, what passes by, what is in danger of being lost. The images are not arranged chronologically, but according to the geometry of dance: the couple, the circle, the gaze of the community, the intermediate gestures, the generations that come together.\u00a0<\/p>

The exhibition is not static. It opens with a lively dance right in the exhibition space, reaches its peak during the Assumption Day festival, features a special evening where residents talk about their photographs and stories, and concludes with the thermiotic celebration.<\/p>

\u201cYou never see Balos the same way twice. Each time, he is reborn amid the bodies, the gazes, the steps, and the brief pauses of the dance. Photography, on the other hand, seems to stop time; yet here it does not freeze it. It returns it to the community as something that still breathes.\n\nThe exhibition \u201cAs Long as Balos Lasts\u201d does not seek a lost image of Kythnos. It explores the way in which the people of Thermia recognize themselves in the images they have preserved, in the celebrations they have experienced, in the faces they remember, and in the bodies that continue to dance. It is a return of the gaze to the community itself\u2014not as nostalgia, but as a living continuity.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
